An ode to my top commenter

An ode to my top commenter For a while, when I was pregnant and blogs were still new, I was the top commenter on my blog. And of course, every post I write is sort of an ode to me, or at least an ode to the current diatribe-colored glasses Im wearing. So there was no need for a shout-out. Then I wrote a lot on mainstream media sites, and I didnt need to write an ode to my top commenters because my bosses did. When they fired me. I got fired from Yahoo  because a big advertiser commented one too many times that I was terrible for women. I got fired from a newspaper because a guy set up spam bot, or whatever its called, to comment that Im an idiot for saying  job hopping is good. Usually my editor, who is now Melissa, would take out the part where I misuse the word spam bot. She works hard to make sure I dont look old and outdated. She tells me I should not use Snapchat like its email, and then  she edits one of my best snaps for the blog  to celebrate my coolness. So Im writing a note here to the editor: dont delete the part where I misuse spam bot. If I did misuse it. Im ready to risk sounding old and technically incompetent on my blog. Theres a reason old people sound technically incompetent: They dont fucking care. Speaking of Melissa, she used to be my top commenter. But probably it doesnt count. Because shes always been the top commenter on blog posts my last editor, Jay, said I shouldnt post. Melissas comments were something like, Jay is right. Its stupid. No one cares. And anyway,  Ive written 500 odes to Melissa. She doesnt need anymore. Oh. Wait. Shell be upset if she reads that. Because unlike everyone else I write about, she never gets sick of popping up in blog posts. So heres a tidbit. Melissa sent me an article about how Gen Y is Gen Y is obsessed with plants. I didnt tell her that I think a Gen Y-er wrote that to feel important. Really, I think that data is related to the data I read in The Economist about how Gen Y women make sex too easy for Gen Y men so the men never want to get married. And even though Melissas boyfriend is Gen X, and I really really like him, I think she should tell him she doesnt have time for sex because shes taking care of her huge collection of plants. I bet hed get much faster with a ring. Mark is the top commenter. If you read the comments you know him. I think hes been reading my blog since before I was even writing it because sometimes it seems like he knows whats in my brain before its even on the page. In a comment on my last post he said he gave up trying to win the game of life. Of course I get it. I strive to be less game-playing and more in-the-moment-living. But since I fail at that let me say that I wish the game of life were to send me the most great links and post the most comments on my blog. Mark would win. (Well, spammers would win, but they are in a different category.) And Marks emails to me are so heartfelt that I always think they are squandered in my in box and should be comments so everyone can see. And he manages to express so much in an email without ever using an emoji, which I have started noticing because I read that we perceive people who use emojis in emails as less intelligent. I wonder if the person who authored that study is really old (which I guess is probably my contemporary, now that Im 50.) I remember when polls showed Gen X has no ambition and studies show Gen Y are narcissists. And it all seems to point to universal truth that people old enough to fund research are disconnected from the realities of people too young to fund research. Generations always feel disconnected from each other. Its just that when you are young and disconnected we call it forward thinking. Now I look for new badges of honor. I think somewhere in the pile of badges unformed is a badge of honor for being connected. Maintaining a relationship over a long period of time becomes a badge when you have lived a long time. So life is a game, even if Mark and I are trying to make it something else, and Mark is a winner, and so am I. And the link Melissa sent me about Gen Y taking care of plants is really about their attempts at connection. I went to visit Melissa and her engagement-delinquent boyfriend in LA, because Melissa, like everyone else in the world, can identify good advice (if youre 30 dont relocate without a ring) but she doesnt follow it. And I went to a garden place which had amazing, museum-quality bonsai and starter vegetable packs. And she bought plants to replace the ones that died on her watch.  I gently steered her to sturdy succulents but did not tell her theyre harder to kill. She lined up her succulents in neat rows all over her apartment like I used to line my apartments with books. The she called me a week after my visit. Remember the tall plant in the corner? The one Ive kept alive for two years and watered so carefully? I just realized its actually fake. Its scary to commit to anything long-term. It might be a deep connection.  It might be plastic. You have to take a leap of faith, with every comment, every email, every visit, that the time investment is good. Connection is difficult and fragile that is why its a badge for winners.

We look forward to them Monday through Thursday,  then mourn  their loss as soon as Monday rolls around again. For many people, Friday is easily the best day of the week. Its not like its any easier to get out of bed on a Friday, mind you, but theres definitely  a certain  cheer in the air around town; unmistakeable positivity and excitement  brightening  the eyes of even the most hungover of souls in the office. Again, it doesnt mean people  necessarily want to be at work on Friday. In fact, quite the opposite might be true; but  daydreaming about the weekend ahead is  a wonderful and welcome distraction for most. Fire Your New Years Resolutions Achieve Your Career Goals Remember all the goals you made in January?  How long did you stay with them, this year?  At the start of the year, theres always a renewed sense of discipline to change in all the ways we know we need to. lose weight spend more time with family exercise more, eat better get passed old resentments figure out what to do with your life A list like that is always such a tall order. No wonder we are pretty much back to the same old same old by April! Fire your New Years resolutions Figuring out what to do with your life seems to be high  on the list. What if we fired this New Years resolution?   We declare, NO MORE!   No more making meaningless gestures on change that we may not be ready for. No more setting ourselves up for too much change all at once.   No more regrets about not being able to choose only one  career path. What if we just let go? Our high-tech culture loves achievable, fast-paced, and income-driven business. We love to be busy and on our phones and making progress. We are obsessed with doing something and making things happen.   Plus, we want it now!   There is good that comes from accomplishing great goals nothing wrong with good-ole American hard work!   Its just when the hard work (or dare I say overwork) replaces depth and direction, we are left feeling disappointed rather than satisfied. Does production alone contribute in a way that helps us sleep better at night? Does our contribution every day at work add value to the things we value?If the answer is no, we may want to change our direction. So, instead of making our grand claims for change and then posting it on Facebook, only to embarrassingly never reach our ambitious goals lets just go straight to change, one step at a time. Start with what you want to do Start with something you want to do instead of things you loathe. For example, start researching articles, studies, or organizations that you value instead of updating your resume.   Or have dinner and drinks (if you do that) with a close friend to talk about what they have always thought youd be good at. Let the new ideas soak in awhile before you jump into EVERYTHING-MUST-CHANGE-NOW mode. My vote is to slow down before you speed up to make sure where you are headed is where you want to go.   How awful to reach your destination only to find out it wasnt worth the race. Here are 5 ideas of fun, achievable, non-humiliating, you-can-do career goals to replace the ones you havent yet started: Give up on trying to stay ahead Have dinner with a friend to dream about a new career Research organizations youve always wanted to work for Journal or write down what you liked to do as a kid Say yes to something new Then, after youve had the fun, call a career coach so we can help keep you motivated to do the rest like updating your resume and creating your master networking plan. Theres no doubt that changing careers is hard and challenging in many ways. So start the new year over, by doing what you want and make sure fun is on your to-do  list. Confession!

Confession! Maybe We Have No Idea What Were Doing from Wordboner Hi kids! I wanted to let you know that Im alive and well a lot less overwhelmed, a lot more focused, and full of energy pep. And verve. I like that word verve. Its the r sandwiched between two vs that makes it so fun. Anyway, I know that my posts have been sporadic lately, and I wanted to make a confession. Its gonna be anti-climatic (confession might make you think that Im going to tell you Im your mothers evil twin or something), but I gotta tell ya anyway: Im not sure what the heck Im doing with this blog anymore. I dont mean this to be negative in any way, shape, or form. Its just that, well, I had a formula with this blog, and then I threw the formula out   which was totally welcomed needed (thank you BYW class!), now I have all these ideas that Im not entirely sure how to execute. Ive been reading your answers to my survey I really appreciate each every one of you who has taken time to complete it, as youve sparked a lot of ideas have given me some awesomely amazing feedback. So, in the future you can expect more content about career transitions for creative souls. You can expect book, site product reviews that will help you along your way. You can expect a monthly link love list that will give you the best of the best (thanks Carolyn for the idea!). You can expect the same ol personal content my past, present future journeys.
